How We Started: 

A group of family and friends traveled to six of the world’s poorest countries and had an opportunity to visit several local schools. We were saddened to see the disrepair of most of the school's classrooms. Students were so eager to learn that they were sitting on the ground, on rocks, tires, or whatever resource was available to accommodate their desire for an education.

As we stood in these classrooms, some of us began to discuss the importance of a desk and how much more these students would learn if they had the advantage of a comfortable seat. As Americans, we couldn’t stand by without doing something to help their situation, so we came up with the idea to donate desks to the schools in need.

We launched our project by reaching out to carpenters in the communities of all six of the countries we visited. Using our own personal resources, we hired the carpenters to build a total of 200 new school desks for students in their regions. This brought needed blessings to the schools and had a positive impact on area businesses. People who were once out of work now had money to buy goods and services, thus stimulating the local economy.

After returning to the U.S., we reflected on our efforts and realized that we had only scratched the surface of a much larger problem.

As a result, Donate A Desk Foundation USA was formed.

Our Executive Leadership

Our team of volunteers is a diverse group of highly capable and committed individuals who bring a wide range of professional experiences to our mission.

Francois Wulu DeMonique, President/CEO

In his role, Mr. DeMonique oversees all the activities of the foundation. He was born in Monrovia, Liberia, one of the six countries visited. Mr. DeMonique's goal is to raise enough money to deliver One Million new school desks to 100 of the world poorest countries by the end of year 2020.

"I have begun to ask friends, people at church and national corporations for financial donations. I want to do all I can to help students in poor countries; this is the work The Almighty God has called me to do," said Mr. DeMonique.

Mr. DeMonique serves on the boards of The John & Minnie Wulu Foundation and The Richard M Nixon Institute (Monrovia, Liberia) International School Foundation. He has been featured in local newspapers, including the "Michigan Chronicle" and "The Detroit News" for his community work and efforts to raise funds to help combat the Ebola crisis in Liberia. His honors and awards include the Leading Lights Award from the Michigan Small Business Association, the Future Work Institute, and an Inspiration Award from First United Baptist Church in Detroit, MI.

Johnnette P. Wulu-Eggert: Executive Vice President, Development

Mrs. Eggert is responsible for the strategic direction and implementation of fundraising in the following areas: major gifts, gift planning, direct response, integrated monthly giving, corporate partnerships, global cause partnerships, special events and the oversight of eight regional offices located throughout the US.

She is a Founding Board Member of Donate A Desk Foundation USA. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of Detroit Mercy in Detroit, MI.

Dominique Grubbs Wulu, Senior Vice President, Development

Ms. Wulu is responsible for the strategic direction and implementation of fundraising in the following areas: gift planning, direct response and corporate partnerships, sports team partnerships, sports marketing, special events and the oversight of Southern States offices in the USA.

She is a Founding Board Member of Donate A Desk Foundation USA.

She holds a Bachelor of Science in Industrial and Systems Engineering from North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro, NC.

Ashley Collins: Vice President, Marketing and Communications

Ms. Collins is responsible for branding, marketing and communications strategy. She oversees several teams, including research, website content, social media and video production.

Ms. Collins is a native of Liberia. She attended the University of Michigan and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration. 

Valarie Reed, Vice President, Program and Community Engagement

Ms. Reed is responsible for raising funds. She oversees a team focused on engaging community, non-government offices and young professional groups, and secures support for all domestic initiatives.

Before coming to Donate A Desk Foundation USA, Ms. Reed was a Case Worker at Cuyahoga County Human Services. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in human development and family services from Bowling Green University Bowling Green Ohio.

Dorothy Banks: Managing Director, Information Technology

Ms. Banks joined the Foundation in 2015 and was appointed to her current position in 2015. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration from the University of Florida.

A native of Florida, Ms. Banks is also a lifelong guitarist and singer—skills she puts to work in area community choral and church choir groups.

Angie Simpson-Thompson, Vice President, Corporate Partnerships

Ms. Thompson and her team lead relationships with the corporate sector in the U.S., including cause-related marketing, sponsorships, philanthropic grants, special events and corporate social responsibility.

Ms. Simpson-Thompson attended Ohio State University and has a passion for sports and social responsibility.

Eddie Wulu Wilson, Sr. Vice President

Mr. Wilson is a founding member of Donate A Desk Foundation USA. he is the foundation's representative for Liberia,Guinea and Sierra Leone. Wilson, live in Monrovia, Liberia He chairs the Committee that makes decisions on which schools in the three countries are in the most urgent need of the donated school desks. Mr. Wilson is a dedicated to helping students in need of desks.

Lekisha Bondurant, Sr. Vice President, Government, Political and community Relations/ New York and New Jersey.

Ms. Bondurant is responsible for all strategic direction and implementation of fundraising in the following areas: major gifts, gift planning, direct response, integrated monthly giving, corporate partnerships, global cause partnerships, special events and the oversight of three states in the Eastern USA, New Jersey, New York and Rhode Island offices.

She holds a key administrative position in East Orange, New Jersey Municipal Government and she is a District Leader for the East Orange Democratic Party and has held several volunteer leadership positions with political campaigns.

Fann Karal, Vice President, Regional Fundraising

Ms. Karal is responsible for leading major gift fundraising across the country with oversight for regional offices in New England, New York, the Southeast, the Midwest, the Southwest and the Northwest. She has held several volunteer leadership positions with the human rights organization Amnesty International USA. Ms. Karal graduated from Simmons College in Boston with a Bachelor’s degree in Economics and International Relations.
